Couples Therapy Intensives
Feel like you're stuck in the same fight on repeat? Living like roommates instead of partners? Or maybe your schedules, stress, or zip codes make weekly therapy impossible. If you're nodding “yes” to any of these, then a Couples Therapy Intensive may be for you.
Sometimes called “marathon therapy,” this approach involves working one-on-one with a seasoned therapist for 12-18 hours over 2 or 3 days. No rush. No surface-level fixes. Just focused, guided work to get to the heart of the pain and start the healing.
Perfect for couples in crisis who need fast relief, long-distance partners, or anyone ready for a relationship breakthrough that weekly therapy just can't deliver. Couples often say they left with clarity and closeness they never thought possible—because finally, they had the space and safety to go deep.
Time won’t heal it. But a weekend might.
What’s Involved?
Marathon Couples Therapy is an intensive and focused therapeutic option for couples in high distress or simply in need of a specialized approach to resolving relationship conflict. Marathon sessions foster increased respect, affection, and closeness while deepening each partner’s understanding of the other’s inner world. In addition, couples learn and practice skills and strategies to keep conflict discussions calm, achieve rapid progress, and resolve issues that typically become gridlocked.
For couples engaging in this modality for Affair Recovery, marathon sessions offer an effective way to begin rebuilding trust and recommitting to the relationship through a three-phase process of atonement, attunement, and attachment.
Before your first session, you’ll complete a series of online assessments via Gottman Connect. These assessments ask questions about the current state of your relationship and what you hope to achieve in therapy. Your responses will shape our goals, and I will review the assessment results before we meet.
Next, we’ll schedule three preparatory appointments—either in person or via video (especially convenient for out-of-town couples). The first session explores what brings you to couples therapy and the history of your relationship. Each of you will then have an individual session with me to dive more deeply into your personal histories and relationship dynamics.
The intensive itself begins with a feedback session, during which I’ll share the results of your assessments, and together we’ll identify key goals and areas of focus for our work. From there, we’ll dig in—building the skills necessary to renew your friendship and connection, manage conflict effectively, and work collaboratively toward your individual and shared dreams for the future.
Most days include six hours of direct therapy and coaching—three in the morning, three in the afternoon—with a break for lunch in between.
All couples will leave with access to the Gottman Relationship Builder, an online platform filled with videos and exercises designed to strengthen and sustain the gains made in therapy. Follow-up appointments are also available if needed. I also recommend that Marathon Couples Therapy be followed by traditional couples and/or individual therapy conducted in your home location.
*Note: If you're traveling from outside the Athens, GA area, I’m happy to help you find local accommodations for the duration of your intensive.
Who Might Benefit?
This service is designed for couples experiencing significant distress who either want to stay together, aren’t sure where they stand, or need urgent support but can’t commit to ongoing weekly sessions—perhaps due to demanding work or travel schedules.
While it’s helpful if both partners are committed to the relationship, that’s not a requirement. Many couples come into this process unsure, especially after a major rupture. That’s okay. I’ll work with you to explore and clarify what’s next.
That said, if both partners have already decided to end the relationship and cannot engage meaningfully in the therapeutic process, this format is unlikely to be effective and may not be the right fit.
Furthermore, Couples Intensives are not suited for couples experiencing:
active alcohol and/or drug addiction on the part of either or both partners, from either partner’s perspective
serious violence in your relationship, threats by one or both partners that serious violence might occur, or fear of such serious violence on the part of one or both partners
untreated major mental illness on the part of either or both partners (schizophrenia, recurrent psychotic depression, or bipolar/manic-depressive illness.) This does not include past, successfully treated psychotic episodes (e.g. post-partum depression with psychosis).
an undisclosed, current affair that you are not willing to disclose (such secrets predict marital therapy failure)
current suicidal or homicidal thoughts by either partner or a history of serious harm inflicted on him/herself or another person
